Image
- Read this news article straight from the source here . Image
Photo: Facebook/ Outward Bound Singapore SINGAPORE: Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) camps on Pulau Ubin will be used as a quarantine facility as part of measures to deal with the Wuhan virus, the Ministry of National Development (MND) said on Tuesday (Jan 28). In response to CNA queries, an MND spokesperson said the Government will ensure that anyone who has been served with a quarantine order will be housed in "appropriate locations". "In addition to selected chalets and university hostels, OBS camps in Pulau Ubin have also been identified as a Government Quarantine Facility (GQF)," the spokesperson added. The camps will undergo a "thorough cleaning process", in accordance with guidelines from the Ministry of Health, to make sure they are safe to stay in. "As people staying at the GQFs are not supposed to come into contact with others, this eliminates the possibility of the spread of virus through person-to-person contact," ...

ST PHOTO: CHONG JUN LIANG Pulau Ubin's town centre boasts a second-generation eatery that has become a beloved makan (eating) spot for some of the National Parks Board (NParks) staff attached to the island, as well as cyclists, fishing enthusiasts and other day-trippers. The Sin Lam Huat coffee shop's home-style dishes, served up in generous portions, has made the cheerful joint a favourite stop on any visit to the island. It is run by sisters Goh Xin Eng, 69, and Goh Guat Lai, 63, who are often mistaken for twins. Their parents started the business about 60 years ago after migrating from Hainan, China. Image
By: Melody Zaccheus, Housing and Heritage Correspondent (Nov 24th, 2019) Pulau Ubin's kampung landscape is being given a boost with moves underway by the National Parks Board (NParks) to restore seven homes and an old coffee shop in its town centre. The project kicked off last month and is addressing problems such as leaking roofs, damaged floorboards and broken windows. In some cases - such as house no. 239 in Jalan Endut Senin - the structures will be given a top-to-toe restoration in what is the first major initiative by NParks to maintain occupied homes on the island. Mothership: S’porean visitors stole durians from the backyards of some Pulau Ubin residents

By: Ashley Tan (Jul 17, 2019) If there’s one food that unites Singaporeans, it’s durians. However, it appears the king of fruits has been causing conflict between mainland Singaporeans and residents of Pulau Ubin, an island considered to be the ‘last kampung’ of Singapore. The best durians are apparently on Ubin Recently on July 14, 2019, a Singaporean by the name of Nor Syazwan Bin Abdul Majid, who calls himself Wan, shared on his online blog the troubles Ubin residents experience during the durian season. Wan’s grandparents were residents of one of Ubin’s kampungs, and he considers himself a “descendant of the Ubin community”. According to Wan, the best durians can be found on the island, and are known to be the most “tender, creamiest and flavourful” of all. Another Straits Times (ST) article on June 8 stated the durians on Ubin were reportedly popular as they were organic, with no pesticides added. Wan’s mother had also shared several tales of how sh...

Ubin Tides: Celebrating The Ubin Spirit

Image
Hi all, Recently I've been featured in the third installment of Ubin Tides, a biannual e-newsletter that highlights on the activities and the latest buzz on Pulau Ubin by NParks. I am very happy to share with you what I had to say in there! -- Hi Ubin Residents! I am a descendant of the Ubin community, the grandchild of Awang Minyak of Kampong Surau. Since I found my grandparents' house in April 2018, I have been returning often to learn more about our island and sharing my experiences on my blog, Wan's Ubin Journal. While there are fewer kampongs today than in the past, one thing remains - the strong kampong spirit within the Ubin community. To celebrate this, I organised a simple mini Balik Kampong event for former Ubin residents of the Malay community last November as a way of thanking them for reconnecting me to my roots. Former residents brought along old photos to reminisce about the good old days. Photo courtesy of Jeffrey Cheng Members of t...

The Business Times: The Heritage Keepers; Syazwan Majid - Pulau Ubin's Custodian

Image
SYAZWAN MAJID Pulau Ubin's custodian By: Tay Suan Chiang (5 Jul 19) As a child, Syazwan Majid wasn’t entertained with fairy tales or nursery rhymes. Instead, his mother would tell him stories about kampung life in Pulau Ubin, where she grew up. The stories used to irk the now 22-year-old who failed to see the relevance “given how I was growing up in modern Singapore in the 2000s.” But as he grew older, he began to appreciate his mum’s nostalgic pining for kampung life. His mum, Noorriah Sulong, lived on Pulau Ubin for over 30 years before moving to the mainland in 1989. During the school holidays, the family made day trips to Pulau Ubin, when she would rent a tandem bicycle, and they would have a picnic by Chek Jawa before visiting former neighbours. “It was mum’s vision of a kampung being her true home that sparked in me a desire to find this joy that she missed,” says Mr Syazwan, who made more frequent visits to the island in the last few years to le...
