"On 15 Aug, we organised a Biology Chapter Outdoor Learning Journey for Biology teachers at Pulau Ubin. Participants were immersed into the Ubin way (with its culture, history, heritage, and nature) and led in a guided tour at Chek Jawa which features rich biodiversity and adaptation of organisms to various habitats.
I’m sure we have allowed our participants to get a taste of the joy of learning which we believe would translate to the JOY OF TEACHING.
In the morning, Dr Adrian Loo (Group Director (Conservation), National Parks Board), spoke to our participants as an educator at heart on how we need to make our students to pause and observe the living things around us, and develop compassion for animals as sentient being.
Participants were given time to consider the pedagogical function of their intended videos that they were making for the use in classroom, aligning to the Singapore Teaching Practice (STP), before launching their video production. The videos they made would either be used to ‘arouse interest’ at the start of a teaching segment, or to ‘provide a clear explanation’ for a particular observation and behaviour.
After editing their videos, participants had a showcase of their video products at the Ubin Living Lab, sharpening and building on each other’s lesson ideas. Although there is no lack of videos on YouTube, we made our participants realise the importance of teachers playing the exemplary role in leading the learning, and the positive impact on students when they see their teachers venturing out of their classrooms (into the wild) to make their learning authentic through making connections with the natural world.
To further the idea of video making, we also shared on the potential of allowing our students articulate their knowledge and observations by making ‘Nature Wonder Videos’ as a form of ‘assessment and feedback’. Ms Sunshine Sim (Deputy Director / Pulau Ubin, NParks) also shared on how educators can come together to form a network to support and develop field trips to Pulau Ubin.
This programme was brought together by the Biology Chapter (Academy of Singapore Teachers), Ms June Wong (Master Teacher / Biology / AST), Ms Anna Koh (Master Teacher / Biology, AST), Mr Salahuddin (Lead Teacher / Biology, SRJC), Mr Philemon Foo (Senior Teacher / Biology, Fuchun Sec Sch), Mr Jacob Tan (Senior Teacher / Biology, Commonwealth Sec Sch), Ms Tan Beng Chiak (Biology Teacher, Singapore Chinese Girls Sch), Ms Deborah Goh and Mr Jason Chen (Academy Officers, AST). We would like to thank NParks for their partnership in making this learning journey possible. And thank God for the beautiful weather we had on the island."

It's my way of saying thank you for remembering and visiting Pulau Ubin and of course, leaving behind memories and stories for others to appreciate and love the beauty of the boomerang-shaped island off the eastern coast of Singapore.
