Getting to Ubin

Spanning 7.52 km from its most eastern point to its west, Pulau Ubin is the second largest natural offshore island in Singapore and is located off the eastern coast of Singapore. In fact, you could see the island if you're standing anywhere on the coast of the mainland from Punggol to Changi.

Pulau Ubin is not just rich in biodiversity, it is also rich with history and heritage! Come on down to experience the existing kampongs and even ask the residents there how life is like growing up on the island, and you'd be surprised on how many stories they have to share with you! The reason why Wan's Ubin Journal was created was also to share with you my family's stories to all of you, too.

Getting to Pulau Ubin is easy! Since it's an island off the coast, we'll definitely need to get there via bumboat. Make your way down to Changi Point Ferry Terminal and to get there, you can either:

SELF-DRIVE/ TAXI/ PRIVATE HIRE CAR
You can simply drive or Grab or take a taxi down to the terminal by either keying in the following address or by simply telling the uncle/auntie:

Changi Point Ferry Terminal
51, Lorong Bekukong
Singapore 499172

BUS
Or you could alight at the Changi Village Bus Terminal (99009) via buses 2, 29, 59 and 109 and walk for about a minute or two to the ferry terminal, it's really that nearby!

Once you've reached the Ferry Terminal, head your way down to the basement and take a seat by the benches to the right to get a ride to Pulau Ubin. From there, you would have to wait till there's 12 people before you could get on board as the bumboats there would only depart once there are 12 pax ready.

BUMBOAT FARES
Bumboat fares are $3.00 per ride (an extra $2.00 if you're bringing your own bike!) and payment is to be made directly to your boat uncle right before departure to Pulau Ubin and vice versa on your return back to Changi.

The journey to Pulau Ubin would span nearly ten minutes, till then enjoy the wonderful sea breeze, sights and sounds of the ships passing through Serangoon Harbour and also the various fisherman casting their rods and nets into the sea for their catch of the day! If you're lucky, you might even have some seawater splashed at you as speedboats and huge ships create waves headed directly to your boat - but be very rest assured, our boat uncles are professionals and have been in this service for so long, perhaps even before you were born (if you're young like me).

If you're planning on leaving Pulau Ubin after 6pm, do make prior arrangements with the boat uncles. If there are no boats back on the island for your return trip, you can always contact the NParks hotline at 1800-471 7300 for assistance.

For more information on getting to Pulau Ubin and the various other activities that you can do on the island, NParks has prepared this short 4-minute introductory video, just for you!

Who knows? Maybe one day you might even find me strolling around the island as I continue to trace back my roots and learn more about the lives of my late grandparents, the former residents of 818K, Kampong Surau, Pulau Ubin.

Hope to see you around on the island!
