Pesta Ubin 2020 is going online!

Pesta Ubin 2020 will begin on 12th September and end on a high-note with Ubin Day 2020 on 26th September! As large gatherings are not allowed as part of COVID-19 safe distancing measures, having nearly a thousand visitors flocking to the island (just as how we have seen for the previous Pesta Ubins) clearly is not possible. So that's why we're taking the annual festivities online, instead!

Organised by passionate individuals and groups from the Friends of Ubin Network (FUN) and supported by the National Parks Board (NParks), this year's Pesta Ubin celebration revolves around the theme of "Remembering Pulau Ubin". Various stakeholders have some exciting activities lined up just for you; for you to join in from the comforts of your home or wherever you may be!

Come and learn about the island's socio-cultural heritage and efforts to revitalise Singapore's final offshore kampung community, find out about ongoing and future restoration and conservation efforts on the island's diverse flora and fauna, unleash the inner creative mastermind with art sessions, explore the beauty of the island through virtual tours and much more! From "live" sharing sessions to virtual tours, there's definitely something engaging for everybody - young and young-at-heart!

I came across this Facebook article by Ria Tan from WildSingapore which reminded me of the constant vulnerability that Pulau Ubin faces when it comes to redevelopment in an ever rapidly-modernising Singapore. Hi All! According to Dictionary.com , a saga is something used to define a "narrative or legend of heroic exploits". So we can already guess that saga pretty much has a very deep and powerful meaning in it - so what is up with saga seeds? Photo courtesy of NParks Known to the scientific community as  Adenanthera pavonina,  their bright red and shiny seeds sure are an eye catcher for those who walk by them; but are they powerful enough to be associated with "saga"? Why, yes of course! There's a story behind why these saga seeds are notorious in Singapore's pastime, especially for our younger children at the time.
