Where Have U-Bin? ft. Wei Qin

Hi All!

Revisiting an old series that I have done before, "Where Have U-Bin?" returns for its second edition and it is a great pleasure for me to introduce Wei Qin to all of you!

I got to know Wei Qin from my 1st Kampong Clean-Up but as we lived in a small world, I apparently would have known her since 2003 since the both of us went through the same primary school years together in Junyuan Primary School. Anyway, let's see what she has to say about Ubin, yeah?

Wei Qin, 22, is a Singaporean who is currently a fourth year student at the National University of Singapore pursuing a degree in Global Studies.

When asked about her first trip to Ubin, she said that it was also fairly recently as she came here when she "was in junior college six years ago to attend a leadership camp on the island and spent two nights there."

She added that she had a memorable time there because she was "bitten by some insect in the middle of the night" and her "bottom lip swelled to thrice the usual size!" We can only imagine how painful it might have been for her, and how awkward she might have looked that day but even through such an experience, she was not moved to not make a return trip to the island to attend WUJ's 1st Kampong Clean-up!

After nearly half a decade, Wei Qin returns to the island along with 20 other volunteers to take part in WUJ's 1st Kampong Clean-up. She was part of the team who helped to clean the interior and surroundings of Cik Kamariah's kampong home. She added that the experience gave her "a peek into kampong life".

Wei Qin absolutely adored Pulau Ubin, sharing with me that she loved "the delicate rays of sunlight filtering through the trees," and the friendly animals where she even had the opportunity to befriend a cat! She also added that there is a "tinge of nostalgia in every corner and relative solitude in contrast to the hustle of mainland Singapore."

While cleaning Cik Kamariah's home, she stumbled upon a cute mini TV! How cool is that! Photo courtesy of Wei Qin.

When asked about what she would take away from her visit to Ubin that day, she commented that "it was a sense of accomplishment seeing the clean frontyard and backyard of Cik Kamariah's home." She also enjoyed the personal stories that Cik Kamariah shared with her throughout the day, and also including mine, too hehe. She said that "after being cooped up in the library for the most part of the week, it felt refreshing to be in a different environment!"

Wei Qin hopes to return to Ubin soon and explore more areas and she also wishes to know more about the history and stories behind the kampongs of Ubin. So, it was a dead giveaway that she would definitely come to Ubin in the future.

" I wish that people who have visited Pulau Ubin can share their experiences with friends and make more quality memories on the island! It would  be wonderful if Ubin could be at the top of your bucket list of places to visit in Singapore." - Wei Qin

Thank you Wei Qin for showing your love for Ubin, its kampongs and community! Thank you too for being part of my inaugural Kampong Clean-up and playing your part in joining my efforts to revitalise and revive the Ubin kampong and community.

So, the question for all you readers out there is: Where have U-bin? (;
